On May 30th, we packed our bags and headed to Arusha for the Career Na Mimi youth empowerment event. The room was packed with ambitious young Tanzanians who were all there for the same reason: to invest in their professional futures.
We didn’t want to just sit in the back of the room as spectators. We wanted to be right there in the mix with everyone.

As we watched the crowd, a familiar problem became incredibly obvious. It’s something we see happening every day across East Africa. Brilliant young professionals meet amazing people at events, panels, and mixers, but those connections almost always vanish within a week.
It’s not because people don't care. It’s because the actual process of exchanging contact info is totally broken. We’ve all been there—frantically typing a misspelled name into a phone, scribbling a number on a scrap of paper, or hoarding physical business cards that inevitably end up lost at the bottom of a backpack. The friction is real, and it kills great conversations before they can even turn into real professional relationships.
We built Kumbuka and Hostlink to solve exactly this. And we knew there was no better place to see if we got it right than right there, live on stage.

When we designed these two tools, we wanted to make professional identity as effortless as possible:
Our philosophy is pretty simple: if you have to stop and think about how to share your details with someone standing right in front of you, the design has failed.
Instead of doing a standard, boring marketing pitch with a bunch of slides, we decided to just show everyone how it works in real life.
We asked a volunteer from the audience—a regional branch manager for a major local bank—if we could borrow her physical business card. Right there on stage, we opened Kumbuka, scanned her card, and watched the app instantly digitize and save her info.
No typing. No typos. No lost information. Just a clean, perfect digital connection made in about three seconds.

The energy in the room shifted immediately. Suddenly, we saw heads drop all across the auditorium—not because people were distracted, but because they were already pulling out their phones to try it themselves before we even asked them to.

The coolest moment of the day happened when we activated Kumbuka Spaces for the event's guest speakers.
Usually, when a great panel ends, a massive line forms at the edge of the stage. Everyone wants to talk to the speaker, but only two or three people actually get to exchange cards before the speaker has to run. The other 90% of the room misses out.
We wanted to fix that. By using Spaces, the featured speakers shared their digital business cards with the entire auditorium at the exact same time.
People were able to save the speakers' verified profiles digitally and smoothly, and then they started using the app to swap digital cards with the peers sitting right next to them.
There is an incredible amount of raw talent in Tanzania and across East Africa. The talent isn't the issue. What’s missing is the infrastructure that allows this talent to connect, stay in touch, and be remembered.
That’s exactly what we are building at Jambo Team—one event, one card, and one meaningful connection at a time.
